Attorney Profile: John D. Ray (Of Counsel)
For the past 17 years, John has focused his practice primarily on workers’ compensation. In that time, he served as a mediator for the Louisiana Workforce Commission (formerly “Louisiana Department of Labor”), Office of Workers’ Compensation (“OWC”).
John has also worked for both New Orleans and Lafayette based defense firms representing various employers and workers’ compensation insurers. For most of the last 11 years, John served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Louisiana Department of Justice, where he specialized exclusively in representing and defending all state agencies and institutions in workers’ compensation suits.
For the last seven and a half years of that time, he served as Section Chief of the Workers’ Compensation Section of Louisiana Department of Justice’s Litigation Division. As Section Chief, he was the supervisor over all workers’ compensation litigation handled by the Louisiana Department of Justice statewide. In addition, as Section Chief, he served as in-house legal advisor to the Office of Risk Management and the Louisiana Department of Justice regarding legal matters relating to workers’ compensation.
Mr. Ray has been a presenter on various occasions at the Louisiana Department of Justice Annual Continuing Legal Education Program.
In 2006, Mr. Ray received a letter of commendation from the Attorney General of Louisiana for his contribution regarding workers’ compensation law as it applies to land based casinos located on Native American reservations.
Mr. Ray is a past vice-chairman of the Workers’ Compensation and Employers’ Liability Law Committee of the American Bar Association from 2006 to 2008. Mr. Ray is also a past Member of the American Inns of Court of Acadiana, Bar Association of the Fifth Circuit, New Orleans Federal Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
Mr. Ray is a member of the Baton Rouge Bar Association as well as its Workers’ Compensation Section. He is also a member of the Workers’ Injury Law and Advocacy Group (WILG). WILG is a national non-profit membership organization dedicated to advocating the interests of millions of workers’ and their families who suffer the consequences of work-related injuries.
Mr. Ray has helped organize fundraisers for Kids’ Chance, a scholarship program for the children of workers’ that are killed or permanently disabled as a result of on the job injuries. He has also served on the Baton Rouge Bar Association’s Bench Bar Committee.
Prior to obtaining his law degree from Southern University Law Center, Mr. Ray worked in the mental health field. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Northwestern State University, where he was a member of the Psi Chi National Honor Society for Psychology.
